Scholarships

The Synod Peacemaking committee awards a scholarship for up to $500 to individuals attending events relating to Peacemaking issues. To apply for the Synod Peacemaking Scholarship, fill out the Peacemaking Scholarship grant application, available below.

Award Programs
The annual Helen Hamilton Peacemaking Recognition Award was named in honor of Elder Helen Hamilton for her pioneering work with peacemaking activities in the Synod of Alaska-Northwest, presbyteries and her continuing involvement as a volunteer with the peacemaking programs in the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The Peacemaking Committee of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest seeks individuals or groups working in or outside the church in creative ways to bring the gospel of reconciliation practically, spiritually and emotionally to bear on their local community, to receive the annual Award.

The Peacemaking Committee announces a new funding initiative to encourage Camps and Conferences to integrate Peacemaking themes into their camping schedule. $3,000 will be available to one Camp and Conference Center per year chosen by the Committee for exemplary use of Peace themes. Funds are to be used for the purpose of implementing Peace Camp programs.

Sessions, presbyteries, specialized ministries, ecumenical partners may submit a grant and/or scholarship application to the Synod Peacemaking Committee for the Peacemaking Scholorship. All grant applications are to be reviewed by the appropriate body in the presbytery within whose bounds the project is located. Funding is for one year.

There is no deadline for Peacemaking grants: they can be submitted at any time to the Synod office.

The Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People is prepared to establish partnerships with groups in the United States or other countries who:

  • are oppressed by poverty or social systems,
  • want to take charge of their own lives,
  • have organized or are organizing to do something about their own conditions,
  • have decided that what they are going to do will produce long term changes for their lives or communities,
  • will control the programs they own and will benefit from them directly.

Partnerships are initiated by applications to the Self-Development of People Committee and are evaluated against Self-Development's funding criteria.

  • Applications are accepted at any time. Annual funds that are allocated to the Synod from the General Assembly disbursement of One Great Hour Sharing Offering portions must be disbursed by December 31 of each year.
  • The application process takes up to six months from the time that the application is received in the SDOP office until it is validated and funded by the National Committee.

Presbyterian Women Grants and Offerings
Minimize

There are several grants available through Presbyterian Women: The Thank Offering and the Birthday Offering.

Collected each fall, the Thank Offering funds projects that meet the needs of people who are aging, disabled, homeless or displaced, as well as children, youth and women, through educational, health, peace and justice programs. Forty percent of this offering is used to support hospitals and community health programs. The remaining 60 percent is used for new creative ideas for mission.

The Birthday Offering is a special offering collected in the spring of each year to celebrate the blessings in the lives of Presbyterian Women. No giving guidelines are suggested other than “give as you are blessed.” The offering funds up to five specific projects that are not included in ongoing General Assembly mission support.
