Peacemaking Award Programs
The annual Helen Hamilton Peacemaking Recognition Award was named in honor of Elder Helen Hamilton for her pioneering work with peacemaking activities in the Synod of Alaska-Northwest, presbyteries and her continuing involvement as a volunteer with the peacemaking programs in the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The Peacemaking Committee of the Synod of Alaska-Northwest seeks individuals or groups working in or outside the church in creative ways to bring the gospel of reconciliation practically, spiritually and emotionally to bear on their local community, to receive the annual Award.

The Peacemaking Committee announces a new funding initiative to encourage Camps and Conferences to integrate Peacemaking themes into their camping schedule. $3,000 will be available to one Camp and Conference Center per year chosen by the Committee for exemplary use of Peace themes. Funds are to be used for the purpose of implementing Peace Camp programs.

Sessions, presbyteries, specialized ministries, ecumenical partners may submit a grant and/or scholarship application to the Synod Peacemaking Committee for the Peacemaking Scholorship. All grant applications are to be reviewed by the appropriate body in the presbytery within whose bounds the project is located. Funding is for one year.

You will find applictions and guidelines for these Peacemaking programs below, under Public Documents.

The Tanzania Library Project
Friday, October 05, 2007 (0 reads)

This week, the Synod office received correspondence from Judith Maier, one of the recipient of this year's Peacemaking Award. She is working with children in Tanzania to build a library for the Kirongwe Primary School in Tanzania. Judith has these words and photo to share:

"More than 60 children take their seats in the 2nd grade classroom at Kirongwe Primary School in Usangi, Tanzania. They come for a 2 hour school day after the 1st graders have had a 2 hour class.

There are more than 100,000 people living a subsistence lifestyle on the ring of mountains at 6,000 feet. Education is highly valued by parents and students, although it is difficult to obtain. Schooling beyond 7th grade is expensive and limited to just the students with the highest scores. Most students have never seen or used a book. The Tanzania Library project will change all that! I'll keep you informed about the project as it progresses."

Sincerely,
Judith Maier

The Usangi Library project has been adopted by the Mission Committee of Northern Light United Church in Juneau, AK. You can touch the lives of these children by donating funds to:

Cambodian Program Receives Synod Peacemaking Grant
Thursday, August 23, 2007 (132 reads)

Congratulations to the First Cambodian Presbyterian Ministry in the Olympia Presbytery for their award of a $600 Synod Peacemaking Grant. These funds will go toward their Gangs Prevention for Children and Youth program, to obtain much needed resources for clalses and teachers. Half of the award will be applied toward getting the Khmer resources for classes, and the other half will go toward recruitment and gas expenses for their volunteer teachers. Rev. Dr. Sahara V. Chea, of the First Cambodian Ministry in Tacoma, had these words to share about their program:

"This project provides our young people with an alternative way of life, turning away from gangs to God in this community of faith. With early education, we provide them with tools to stay out of gang activities. Our young people are vulnerable to gangs. We must seek to provide these children and youth with Cambodian cultural activities such as language classes and Bible lessons as they are opening up to learning God and to become part of our community of faith. These programs allow them to learn more about their identity, creating a sense of belonging within the Christian community, which is their family that they have found through the work of this ministry outreach. As a community of faith, we believe that it is vital to reach out to them at the early age and seek to plant a good seed from God in their hearts so that it will grow and bear good fruits."
